What do I call them? The cousin and relationship calculator
Pick the path from you to a relative, one person at a time: your father, then his younger brother, then his son. You’ll see what they are to you in English, and the word in Hindi, Punjabi, Marathi, Bengali, Tamil and Spanish.
Some languages name a relative by whose side of a marriage they’re on, such as a wife’s brother (Saala) or a husband’s younger brother (Devar).

How cousins are counted
First cousins share grandparents: your father’s brother’s children, or your mother’s sister’s. Second cousins share great-grandparents, so they’re your parents’ first cousins’ children. Third cousins share great-great-grandparents.
“Removed” means a generation apart. Your father’s first cousin is your first cousin once removed, and so is your first cousin’s child. Twice removed is two generations apart.
Why Hindi and other languages have more words
English says “uncle” for five different people. Hindi has Tau (father’s older brother), Chacha (father’s younger brother), Mama (mother’s brother), and Phupha and Mausa for the husbands of your father’s and mother’s sisters. This calculator asks whether a brother or sister is older or younger, and whether you’re a man or a woman, so it can give the right word. Where a language has no single word, it says so instead of guessing.
Common questions
What is my father’s cousin to me? Your first cousin once removed. Hindi has no single word for this one, so the calculator shows only the English.
What is my cousin’s child to me? Your first cousin once removed. Their children are your first cousin twice removed.
What do I call my wife’s brother in Hindi? Saala. Your husband’s younger brother is Devar, and his older brother is Jeth.
