Quick tool
Open a GEDCOM file, privately
Got a .ged file from Ancestry, MyHeritage or an old family tree program? Open it here to see it as a tree, find anyone in it, and see how they’re related to each other.
Your file never leaves this device. It’s read here in your browser and not uploaded anywhere. You can check: turn off your internet once this page has loaded, and it still works. Closing the page forgets it.
What is a GEDCOM file?
GEDCOM is the file every family tree program can save and read: names, dates, places, and who is whose parent, child and partner. Ancestry, MyHeritage, Gramps and Family Tree Maker all export it, usually as a file ending in .ged.
Where to find yours
Most family tree sites and programs have an export in the tree’s settings: look for “Export tree” or “Export to GEDCOM”. Menus change from time to time, so each site’s help pages say where it is today.
What this viewer doesn’t show
Photos aren’t inside a .ged file (it only names them), so they can’t be shown. Stories and notes are counted but not shown here. Nothing you see can be edited or saved: for that, bring the file into the app.
Keep this family, and share it
Bring the same file into Family Tree by Manr.ai (Settings, then Import a GEDCOM). Add photos and stories, get birthday reminders, and invite relatives: each sees the family from their own place. Private, and free during beta.
